from history of the feast
Circumcision (one of the Old Testament rites) was established in the sign of the Covenant of God with the Forefather Abraham.
Circumcision in the Old Testament was a prototype of the New Testament Baptism, in the sign of the Covenant with God, in the sign of cleansing from original sin. Jesus Christ having no sin did not need any cleansing, being the Son of God, however took the circumcision in order to show Him be not only True God, but also a True Human.
He accepted circumcision, prescribed for sinful people, by His humility, to show how rigorously Divine ordinances should be observed. Having received circumcision, the Lord received the name Jesus, which means "Saviour."
